FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Beijing, China, Oct. 1, 1999 - Dr. Shawn Buckley and his wife, Margo Buckley, were
presented with the National Friendship Award, the highest honor that China gives
a foreigner. They were chosen from among the 80,000 foreign experts that help

central Hubei Province. The Buckleys won the province's nomination to the National
Award last month.
Today was China's 50th Anniversary, commemorating the day 50 years ago when Chairman
Mao Zedong marched into Beijing after his victory over the Chinese Nationalists.
Dr. and Mrs. Buckley watched the day-long parade from the viewing stands of Tiananmen
Tower, overlooking Tiananmen Square. The parade included precision Chinese military
units, floats from each province, cultural delegations plus one of China's largest-ever
fireworks displays.
Last night the Buckleys attended a banquet at the Great Hall of the People.
The meal was a duplicate of the dinner served to Chairman Mao fifty
years ago, complete with the pumpkin soup that has become a tradition in
Chinese banquets. President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji addressed
the banquet which was also attended by Dell Chairman Michael Dell and Ericsson
