CAItech Co-founder Appointed Mayor of Wuhan

San Jose, CA, Dec. 29, 2001 - Dr. Zhou Ji, co-founder of high tech company CAItech, was appointed Mayor of Wuhan, China.  Wuhan, China's fifth largest city has a population of over 7 million.  It is an inland Chinese city equidistant from Beijing in the north, Hong Kong/Shenzhen in the south and Shanghai to the East.  Wuhan is fast becoming China's manufacturing and distribution center.  The city lies on the main North-South rail line between Beijing and Hong Kong and on the Yangtze River, China's major East-West transportation corridor.

In 1997, Dr. Zhou joined with Dr. Shawn Buckley to found CAItech, a Silicon Valley manufacturer of industrial inspection and scanning machines.  The goal of the company was to develop next generation inspection technology using Chinese software combined with U.S. motion control and sensing technology.

Zhou was the former Vice Governor of Hubei Province in central China.  He was directly responsible for the Province's science and technology initiatives.  Hubei is one of the most populous provinces in China with over 60 million people.  Dr. Zhou was instrumental in starting Wuhan's "Optical Valley", the center of China's optical manufacturing industry.

Jointly, he was President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), one of the top five technical universities in China.  Under Zhou's leadership, HUST won the CACA/SME University Lead Award in 1999 from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (Detroit, MI) based on its achievements in Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems.  Prior to being named President of HUST, Dr. Zhou held several posts there: Vice President of the University, Dean of Engineering and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Mayor Zhou was educated at Tsinghua University in Beijing, considered China's premier technical university.  He was among the first group of Chinese scholars to be educated in the West after China's Cultural Revolution.  He received his doctoral degree at SUNY-Buffalo in 1984.
