STAMPINGS
A stamping for a shaft seal is shown below. The seal is held in a
fixture on a turntable mounted on the rotary table. The inspection
task is to measure the variation in diameter of the inner seal surface: does
it flare out or flare in?.

The stamping was scanned in four different rotations, each 90 degrees from
each other. The four views were merged together to get the composite
datacloud shown below.

In order to measure the variation in the inner seal diameter, the surface
was modeled as three rings, shown color-coded below. Each ring had the
same axis, but only one third of the inner seal datacloud points. Since
thousands of datapoints were least squares fit
to each ring, the diameter variation could be measured very accurately.
